Welcome

The Nantes Institute of Materials Jean Rouxel has applied for a 4th edition in 2022 of a Thematic School on X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). XPS is a surface analysis technique that is widely used in many disciplines such as microelectronics, batteries, photovoltaics, catalysis, biology, surface functionalization among others. This technique proves to be an essential tool for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of surfaces such as the characterization of thin films or species adsorbed on nanoparticles. It also allows the study of oxidation phenomena and the characterization of chemical bonds. Although XPS is a surface analysis technique, the analysis of samples in volume and the study of interfaces are possible via the implementation of ion erosion. The interpretation of the data is then delicate and requires taking into account possible artifacts. Whatever the configuration, reliable information is conditioned by a good knowledge of measurement devices and data processing software and this school meets this need for training, through courses and tutorials at two levels, initiation and deepening. The school is addressed, in priority, to the permanent staff of laboratories and platforms having XPS devices and to the non-permanent staff in these structures in France and abroad.

This training will be held IN ENGLISH.

The workshop consists in :

  • Theoretical courses on XPS spectroscopy and imaging,
  • Practical courses with CasaXPS Software,
  • Training sessions with data and videos supplied (video examples),
  • Brainstorming dedicated to difficult cases.
  • Poster session (with the SFV award) for PhD students and post-doctoral fellows

Parallel sessions:

  • for beginners
  • for experts

This training is the opportunity:

  • To gain an overview of XPS, ranging from the measuring technique to data interpretation
  • To explore the possibilities of data processing with the software CasaXPS
  • To create a database of examples of experimental data and their XPS analyses
  • To treat difficult experimental cases, proposed by participants.

Please bring a laptop (Windows) with you (at least one for two persons).
